Meet the 2024 Lexus GX

June 17th, 2024 by

The Lexus GX has finally received a much-anticipated redesign for 2024. Built on an all-new platform with an updated powertrain and a suite of modern features, the GX550’s rugged appearance is one of the few connections to its previous iterations.  The GX rides on the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and the Toyota Tundra, now featuring a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain—available with or without hybrid assist—replacing the outgoing model’s V-8.

Dual Personalities: Luxury and Off-Road Capabilities

The GX550 caters to both luxury seekers and off-road adventurers. For those who plan to spend most of their time on asphalt, the Luxury trim enhances the GX550’s interior with premium features such as semi-aniline leather upholstery, 10-way adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation, illuminated door sill plates, and second-row window shades. It also comes with larger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX’s wheel wells, giving it a more upscale look.

For the same price, the Overtrail+ trim offers a rugged appearance and increased off-road capabilities, albeit at the cost of the third row of seats and some luxury amenities. This trim is ideal for those planning outdoor adventures.

Powerful Performance and Advanced Off-Road Tech

Under the hood, a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine powers the GX550, delivering 349 horsepower—more than the previous generation’s V-8. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard, and all models come with four-wheel drive. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are equipped with additional off-road features, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch All-Terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with greater wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for various terrains.

On the road, the GX550 offers robust performance and feels lively off the line. The ride can be stiff, particularly with the larger wheels, but steering is crisp, and the GX handles well for a tall, boxy SUV. However, its true prowess shines off-road, with excellent outward visibility making it easier to navigate tight trails. In initial tests, the Overtrail model’s advanced off-road technology impressed, particularly with features like the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS), which enhances stability and reduces head-toss by independently disconnecting the front or rear anti-roll bars.

At the test track, the GX550 Premium reached 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds, a full second faster than its predecessor. It can also tow up to 9096 pounds, outperforming crossover rivals such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5. Towing capacity for the upcoming hybrid powertrain has not yet been disclosed.

Luxurious Interior and Advanced Technology

Despite its rugged exterior, the GX550 offers a luxurious interior. Buyers can choose from faux or genuine leather upholstery in various colors, with Overtrail variants featuring faux-suede accents in dark green. The Premium and Luxury trims provide three rows of seats, accommodating up to seven passengers with the standard second-row bench or six with optional captain’s chairs. The Overtrail models are strictly two-row, seating up to five. The third row offers optional power controls, and other available features include a cooled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob.

All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be customized to display various driver information. Most models include six USB-C ports throughout the interior, while Overtrail and Overtrail+ models have four. A wireless smartphone charging pad is optional. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, with an upgrade option to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system for audiophiles.

The redesigned 2024 Lexus GX550 combines modern technology and luxury with robust off-road capabilities, making it a versatile choice for both urban and adventurous driving.
