The story of Uhlman’s Ice Cream is one rooted in community, family, and, of course, a whole lot of delicious scoops.

It all began in 1940, when George Smith opened Smithfield Ice Cream on Millbury Street in Worcester, MA. The business quickly grew, eventually expanding to 12 locations throughout Worcester County. These shops offered sit-down ice cream service and sold take-home half-pints and quarts, an indulgent treat for families of the era. Among the sweet memories is the legendary “Lilly Dilly” treat, which current owner Richard fondly remembers costing just five cents. At the time, cones were a mere 15 cents!

As a young boy, Richard spent his summers working alongside his father George, learning the business from the ground up. In 1967, that legacy took a new turn when George teamed up with a childhood friend and local farmer, Howard Uhlman, to transform a small farm stand in Westborough into what is now Uhlman’s Ice Cream.

George ran the stand until 1987, when Richard took over operations. Under his leadership, Uhlman’s continued to grow. Then, in 2010, Richard’s stepdaughter Kelley Marston stepped in to manage the business, eventually taking the reins as owner. With her came a modern refresh: Uhlman’s launched a website, added credit card payments, and adapted to the digital age, even embracing e-commerce during the challenges of COVID-19.

Today, Uhlman’s offers over 70 hard ice cream flavors, plus soft-serve, fat-free soft and hard yogurt, and dairy-free and allergy-friendly options for all. Whether you’re stopping by for a nostalgic float, a quick lunch, or just to cool off with your favorite flavor, Uhlman’s continues to be a place where memories are made.

Visit them at 232 E. Main Street, Westborough, MA

Come for the ice cream—stay for the tradition.
